The Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Research Scientist (Marine Mammal Ecologist) to be part of our South Australian Research and Development Institute Division, South Australian Government Department of Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA). The role reports to the Principal Scientist (Ecosystem Effects of Fishing and Aquaculture SubProgram).

The Senior Research Scientist (Marine Mammal Ecologist) will conduct high quality research, and ensure the timely delivery of research outcomes to Government and industry clients and the community, which are of major importance to natural resources management.

The incumbent provides support to the Sub-Program Leader in undertaking and managing research projects, including project budgets, permitting and supervising technical staff and students. The Senior Research Scientist is responsible for coordinating fieldwork and undertaking data collection and analyses and report and manuscript preparation for projects principally funded by PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC); and the SA Department of Environment and Water (DEW) and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC).

These projects have some overlap but broadly they aim to 1) assess, monitor and mitigate seafood industry interactions with protected species; 2) population and ecological studies of marine protected species to inform conservation and management; and 3) ecological modelling as a decision support tool for fisheries and aquaculture and ecosystem-based management. The incumbent utilises exceptional scientific skills and experience to help explore funding opportunities and develop new projects, particularly related to protected marine protected species population and foraging ecology and managing their interactions with the seafood industry and ecological modelling.

Ocean Park accepts local and international students to join its research internship and volunteer programme. How to get involved?
Applications are not restricted from the above-mentioned fields. The selection is based on both academic results and extracurricular merits, but most importantly on the candidates’ dedication and self-motivation.

Spring 2020 Dolphin Research Internship

Savannah State University Dolphin Sciences Laboratory (SSUDS lab) internships

The SSUDS lab is located adjacent to the marsh on the campus of Savannah State University in coastal Georgia and is led by Dr. Tara Cox. The SSUDS lab studies spatial ecology, conservation biology of long-lived marine vertebrates, marine and coastal policy and management, and human interactions with marine mammals. Current projects include: Human-interaction behaviors (particularly begging), stock structure and abundance estimates, catalog matching to other study areas in the SE USA, contaminant loads, and genetics of common bottlenose dolphins.

The SSUDS Lab selects volunteer interns during three seasons each year:
• Winter/Spring (positions January to May, applications due by October 1st);
• Summer (positions May to August, applications due by March 1st);
• Fall (positions August to December, applications due by June 1st).

Interns will support graduate research on common bottlenose dolphins living in the local waterways. There may be additional opportunities to help other marine science graduate students with diverse fieldwork.

The SSUDS lab is currently accepting applications for Spring 2020 interns.
There are 2 positions available. Application deadline is October 1st.

Dates: Jan 6 – May 29 (Start and end dates are flexible)
Location: Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia
Time: Interns are expected to commit to ~30 hours per week, and time will be split between lab and field work. Dolphin surveys will be conducted 2 days per month, with additional surveys in May.

Duties:
Lab duties: photo-identification, data entry and double checking
Field duties: assisting with small boat-based photo-identification surveys including sighting dolphins, recording data, photographing dorsal fins, and measuring environmental variables
Stranding response: although strandings are rare and unpredictable, you may be asked to help with data collection and necropsies
Class: Interns are welcome to sit in on the GIS course taught by Dr. Cox in the spring. Please note that hours spent in class do not count towards lab hours.

Job Summary: This unique position will provide the intern with work experience in many different aspects of a rescue and rehabilitation centre with a primary focus on fundraising and planning outreach events. The intern will be expected to assist with developing the fundraising program, plan/attend events, source other types of funding, and promote ocean conservation and sustainability while representing SRI. We seek to have two events per week planned offsite (seal releases, beach cleans, information tables at shopping centers, markets, festivals, etc.) to raise awareness and donations, and this role will help us to achieve that goal. When not attending events the intern will work on site assisting with educational tours and administration duties. The applicant will also get the opportunity to be trained on and be involved with assisting in the husbandry care and maintenance of rehabilitation animals if desired.

Requirements: Applicants are desired to have previous experience in fundraising and/or worked in nonprofits. A degree or pursuit of a degree in business management, event planning, marketing, public relations, fundraising, or similar field are preferred. Applicants must be organized, personable, show initiative and have ability to independently plan events. Background knowledge of marine mammals and ocean ecology is preferred. Having good people skills, being comfortable around children and the ability to speak to a crowd is a must. Applicants must possess the ability to adapt to an ever-changing work environment, and be available to work nights, weekends and holidays. Ability to drive in Ireland preferred (current driver’s license and clean driving record). Having your own vehicle is preferred, however applicants over 25 years of age may be able to drive SRI vehicles.

Educate the public on ocean conservation via events, tours and presentations.

Spring internship position for the Pinniped Cognition and Sensory Systems Lab – UC Santa Cruz

The Pinniped Cognition and Sensory Systems Laboratory at UC Santa Cruz explores the sensory, cognitive, behavioral ecology, and physiology of marine mammals. We are currently seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals for the 2020 spring internship (February 3rd-June 5th 2020). This is an intensive, 4-month, 5-day-a-week opportunity for recent college graduates with an interest in marine mammalogy, bioacoustics, comparative cognition, and/or animal husbandry. A general overview of the research project can be found on our project website, http://pinnipedlab.ucsc.edu. Interns complete a rigorous apprenticeship program followed by immersion in all aspects of ongoing research with seals and sea lions. This internship will require applicants to be wet, dirty, and outdoors in all weather conditions. This position is unfunded; housing is not provided and interns must provide their own transportation to and from Long Marine Laboratory each day.

The candidate’s time will be split in half between assisting in the daily care of the animals and hospital operations, and providing educational tours to the public, assisting with fundraising projects, and assisting with administrative duties. The variation of responsibilities provide interns with excellent understanding of what it takes to successfully operate the many different aspects of a wildlife charity. Additionally, each intern gets the opportunity to independently plan one fundraiser project, to learn leadership and organisational skills. Interns that excel may be offered additional levels of responsibility to pursue specialized skill sets.

Requirements: For consideration, applicants must have a background in areas of study such as Pre-Vet, Biology, Zoology, Marine Biology, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science or other animal related field. Applicants must be able to follow written and oral instructions, possess effective communication skills, and be passionate about marine animals and their environment. Applicants should be agile with a good sense of balance in order to maneuver around enclosures, and must be physically fit and able to lift 25 kg. Applicants must possess the ability to adapt in a fast paced, ever changing environment and have a positive, purposeful attitude. They must be willing to work long hours, nights, weekends and holidays. Previous animal care and handling experience as well as public speaking skills are preferred, however interns will receive training to develop these skills.

Daily animal diet preparations and routine cleaning of enclosures and work areas.

They will plan/attend community outreach events, school visits, birthday parties, fundraisers and networking events to promote awareness of SRI’s mission of marine conservation. They will also be trained to give daily educational tours of the Centre as well as providing customer care in the gift shop. There may be some involvement in assisting in the husbandry care and maintenance of rehabilitation animals if interested.
Requirements: Applicants must have a background and dedicated interest in areas of study such as Zoology, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Conservation, Education, Oceanography, Child Development or a related field. Background knowledge of marine mammals is preferred but not required. Applicants must be organized, personable, self-motivated, resourceful and have experience facilitating events and lessons for large groups. Great networking and public speaking skills are a must. Interns will be expected to maintain a high level of professionalism and diplomacy whenever they are representing Seal Rescue Ireland. Job Summary: This position will provide the intern with work experience in all aspects of a rescue and rehabilitation centre with a primary focus on producing quality media content, digital design, written content, photos and video for use on our website, social media, monthly newsletter, adoptions programme, marketing, educational and fundraising projects. The intern will assist with marketing and advertising projects, fundraising programs and events, and other administrative tasks. This position requires a skilled photographer who will be responsible for capturing consistent photographs and videos of the animals in care to tell their stories, daily activities at the centre, and events on and off-site (i.e. rescues, releases, educational talks, outreach events, etc.), as well as developing content consistent with SRI’s message of ocean conservation and sustainability. Partial involvement in assisting in husbandry care of rehabilitation animals is an option if interested.

Requirements: Applicants must have a keen interest in marine conservation, biology and environmental stewardship. Skills in developing media content and photography are a must, with examples of your work to be submitted with your application. Applicants must have effective communication skills, the ability to represent SRI in professional manner and work well in a team setting. Applicants must possess the ability to adapt to an ever-changing work environment, and be available to work nights, weekends and holidays. Biology Department, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)

The Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Scientist level on our Scientific Staff (www.whoi.edu/biology). Scientific Staff members are expected to develop independent, externally-funded, and internationally-recognized research programs. They also have the option of advising graduate students and teaching courses through the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography and Oceanographic Engineering.

Opportunities for interdisciplinary research exist through collaborations with colleagues in the other science departments, centers, and labs as well as with researchers in the broader Woods Hole scientific community. WHOI’s Scientific Staff are expected to provide for their salaries from grants and contracts. The Institution provides salary support when no other funding is available, as well as significant internal funding opportunities for developing innovative research projects. Candidates hired at the junior level will receive an initial appointment for four years.

Conservation Education Internship at The Marine Mammal Center (San Luis Obispo Operations)

The Marine Mammal Center's San Luis Obispo Operations (SLO) is currently recruiting for the Winter 2020 Conservation Education Internship.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Conservation Education Intern is a member of the Conservation Education Team within the broader San Luis Obispo Operations Team. The intern will actively engage the local community through outreach events, education opportunities, festivals and fairs, and interaction with the public on the beach during stranded marine mammal response. The intern will learn and convey information on The Marine Mammal Center’s global conservation mission and local activities that support this mission, with the goal of inspiring our audiences to become ocean stewards and supporters of The Marine Mammal Center. The intern will work with the Conservation Education Team to brainstorm and plan outreach and education events. There may be limited opportunities if interested and as needed to learn and assist in marine mammal rescue and care, however the focus of the position is conservation education. The position will collaborate with other staff, interns and student programs at the Morro Bay facility, as well as team members across the Center’s range. The intern will be supported and supervised by the San Luis Obispo Operations Assistant and the Operations Manager.
