SMM Research Grants, Awards and Scholarships include:
- Small Grants-in-Aid of Research
Small annual grants of up to $2000 USD to help support marine mammal research in countries where scientists have less access to research funds. - Kenneth S. Norris Lifetime Achievement Award
An acknowledgement of exemplary lifetime contributions to science and society through research, teaching, and service in marine mammalogy. The recipient is invite to give a plenary talk at the Biennial Conference. - Emily B. Shane Award
An award for up to $10,000 USD to support projects with clear conservation priorities for an odontocete or sirenian species, population, or habitat critical to the species. - Louis M. Herman Research Scholarship
A biennial scholarship of $6000 USD to support a research project that contributes to our understanding of either cetacean cognition and sensory perception (laboratory or field studies), or humpback whale behavioral ecology or communication. - John E. Heyning Research Award
An biennial award of up to $5000 USD for the best proposal received from an established researcher to investigate any area of cetacean integrative biology that relates diverse aspects of biology within an evolutionary context. - John R. Twiss Award
For the best student paper published in Marine Mammal Science that describes innovative research related to marine mammal habitat and ecosystem conservation. The Twiss Award winner receives $500 and a certificate and is acknowledged at the Biennial Conference.
