Protected Species Observer

Coastwise Consulting Inc. is seeking to subcontract qualified individuals to monitor impacts to protected species during marine construction projects on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

Qualified individuals will generally have a B.S. in Marine Biology, Ecology, or a related field, and experience with sea turtles, marine mammals, manatee and/or sturgeon. Specialized or extensive experience with these species may be substituted in lieu of educational experience.

Most projects involve two observers living and working onboard ships for periods of 20 – 30 days, although this can vary depending on individual preference. Typically, two observers work 12-hours each to provide 24-hour coverage. Accommodations on many of these vessels are quite comfortable.

Observers must have the ability to interact with ship and construction crews in a friendly and professional manner, physically inspect equipment that may require walking, bending, climbing, crawling, and sometimes lifting 20-50 pounds. Observers must be able to identify various species of sea turtles, marine mammals and sturgeon, complete by-catch analyses of various species of marine life using field guides, and record and report all findings in a clear and detailed way.

Requirements:

Must reside and be legally able to work in the United States
Must be able to obtain a TWIC card for job site access
Must be in good physical condition and able to stand, walk, bend, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs
Must be able to identify sea turtles and marine mammals to species level
Must have the ability to identify by-catch species using field guides
Must work well both independently and with others
Must possess good verbal and written communication skills
Must be able to handle/ sample living and dead marine life
Must have reliable transportation and/or be capable of arranging travel to and from job sites

This is an Independent Contractor position. Compensation is $250+ per day, and may vary depending on the details of each contract. Room and board will be provided while working off-shore.

Job Summary:
The Community Outreach Coordinator leads delivery methods that increase visibility of The Marine Mammal Center’s mission and strategic priorities within the surrounding community in collaboration with the team and other departments. This position will include identifying key audiences, creating messaging and materials, planning and implementing events and activities that will engage the community and build strong relationships, ensuring the Center’s mission and strategic priorities are effectively communicated to the community.

Essential Functions:

Community Outreach Coordination: 95%

• Serve as a contact and point person for volunteers throughout the day as questions arise.
• Serve as a mentor and guide for community engagement volunteers.
• Approach and interact with guests to personalize their experience at the Center or Center-led outreach activities.
• Troubleshoot and diffuse potentially negative guest situations with a high level of hospitality, escalating as needed, and coordinating communication across Conservation Engagement Team.

Captain 100 ton

Immediate opening: Wild Dolphin Project is looking for a permanent 100 ton captain for its 62’ power catamaran R/V Stenella. We study dolphins in the Bahamas during summer months (8, 10 day trips) and work offshore in Florida occasionally in our off- season (October through April). The vessel carries 6 crew (captain, first mate, cook, research director and 2 graduate students/interns), and 6 passengers for our summer trips. Must enjoy live aboard work on the ocean for extensive time.
Start Date: Immediate, Spring 2025
Full Time: 40 hours/week during non-field, with compensation time given for summer field time and any weekends worked offseason due to field schedule.

Expectations: Captain should be available all field season (May through Sept) and be available nearby until the end of the hurricane season (late November) to secure boat as needed. Captain usually preps boat the day before field trips, and day after trips for needed maintenance (with first mate help). Since boat work off-season is primarily in Florida, flexibility in schedule can be accommodated with notice.

Laboratory Technician 1 or 2

Summary:
This position is responsible for providing diagnostic and research laboratory technical support for the Alaska SeaLife Center. Duties include oversight of the day-to-day quality control and analyses including but not limited to hematology, serum chemistry, microbiology (aerobic and anaerobic), urinalysis, fecal parasite exams, and water coliform tests. This position assists with and performs diagnostic and medical tasks to ensure the health and welfare of all animals, as well as supports internal and external research projects.

Education/Training Requirements:
Grade 2-

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related sciences.
Minimum of 1 year of experience with laboratory techniques (i.e. urinalysis, automated and manual blood analysis, basic cytology, etc.) and experience working with biological specimens from exotic or zoological animals.
Certification in laboratory safety, hazardous materials handling, emergency first aid, and open water SCUBA diving is preferred.
Highly desired specific skills include familiarity with Statistics (such as R), Hydrogen Peroxide Production, RNA:DNA Ratio analysis, Heat Shock Protein assays, q PCR and RT-qPCR sequencing, diet analysis, and respirometry.

Grade 3-

In addition to the above,
Minimum of 2 years or completion of a laboratory or veterinary certificate program. experience with laboratory techniques (i.e. urinalysis, automated and manual blood analysis, basic cytology, etc.) and experience working with biological specimens from exotic or zoological animals.
Essential Duties:
1. Provides routine and emergency diagnostic laboratory technical support as part of Alaska SeaLife Center program of veterinary medicine or assigned research projects starting with receiving samples from staff, analyzing (manual and automated techniques) samples, sending samples to outside laboratories as required, reporting results, archiving samples, and maintaining inventory records. Learns and assists with necropsies on site and in the field. Assists with field and vessel based projects. Grade 3: Coordinates and conducts necropsies on site and in the field.
2. Learns and assists with all aspects of diagnostic, laboratory, and necropsy areas including general organization and cleanliness of the space and equipment; inventory of samples and supplies; procurement and stocking of materials; appropriate disposal of biological and chemical waste to maintain biosafety; and maintenance of equipment including calibration, QA/QC, and repairs.
Grade 3: Conducts activities independently in these areas.
3. Maintains a variety of records and logs in paper and/or electronic format to include test results,
send outs, equipment maintenance, and others as needed.

Marine Mammal Biologist / Technical Project Manager

HDR EOC's Marine Science team is currently in need of a Marine Mammal Biologist / Technical Project Manager to work out of our Virginia Beach, VA office. In this role, you will assist our U.S. Navy client with a wide range of project management, aerial survey, vessel-based fieldwork, reporting, and team support in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of America (Mexico), and Pacific Ocean operating areas as well as assist with expanding our client-base in the Norfolk, VA area.

The ideal candidate will have consulting and project management expertise along with an extensive knowledge in Marine Science with specific interests focused on one or more of the following: marine mammal behavior, ecology, abundance, distribution, health assessments using UAS, behavioral responses to stimuli, and/or understanding anthropogenic effects on marine mammals. This position is subject to a governmental background check.

In the role of Marine Biologist, we'll count on you to:
-Manage multiple projects from conception, planning, budgeting, reporting, and completion
-Perform scientific/environmental project assignments requiring application of moderately complex objectives and limited variables
-Direct the work of scientists, subcontractors, technical, and clerical personnel
-Work independently on medium-size projects, or assist more-senior scientists on larger projects

Preferred Qualifications

-Alternatively, we will consider someone with a Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology with a minimum of 5 years relevant marine mammal-focused experience, managing scientific research projects focused on marine mammal biology, ecology, or behavior in a consulting, federal government, or university-related research capacity
-Due to client contract requirements US Citizenship is required.
-Ability to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC) upon hire
-Ability to obtain clearance at the Secret level

Mission:
The Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that inspires ocean stewardship through animal rescue and rehabilitation, medical research, STEM education programs, and advocacy for a healthy ocean.

Job Summary:
We are seeking a full-time, temporary Volunteer Coordinator to assist with our volunteer program while our Director of Volunteer Engagement is on leave. The candidate applying for this position must recognize the importance of our volunteer program at PMMC, as we are run by a small paid staff and a wide volunteer base of dedicated individuals. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the retention and engagement of 400+ volunteers. This position works with all departments to ensure volunteer needs are met at PMMC. This role is responsible for coordinating the recruitment, interview process, and onboarding of all volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Engage with our volunteer base
• Send out volunteer communications
• Respond to volunteer inquiries
• Organize volunteer schedules (Animal Care, Education, and Retail)
• Maintain volunteer recruitment websites
• Review volunteer applications and background checks
• Conduct volunteer interviews with respective departments
• Prepare paperwork for volunteer onboarding
• Coordinate and run volunteer orientations
• Assemble and distribute our Team PMMC Newsletter
• Deliver incentive programs
• Conflict resolution for volunteers
• Protect PMMC’s values and individuals’ privacy by maintaining confidentiality

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience
• Must have a valid California Driver’s License and automobile insurance
• Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff, board members, volunteers, and guests
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Other relevant information:
• Familiarity with Better Impact, Slack, Moodle, Canva, and Constant Contact is a plus

Location:
While we undergo renovations to our main center, the office location will be split between our Field Hospital and Broadway office; both in Laguna Beach.

Professor, Marine Mammal Science

New College of Florida invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track position in Marine Mammal Science with expertise in research methods and statistics, including spatial analysis (GIS) and modeling, to strengthen and expand our rapidly growing Marine Mammal Science graduate program starting in August 2025. Our Master’s program is a 2-year, interdisciplinary, research-based course of study preparing students for further graduate positions in doctoral and applied programs, and work in government agencies, zoos and aquariums, and conservation and health settings. To graduate, all students must complete a research-based thesis of publication quality.

Examples of Duties
The successful candidate will have or be actively developing a high-impact research program in some aspect of marine mammal science (e.g., population biology, behavior, cognition, physiology, ecology, sensory systems, genetics, health). The candidate will supervise 4-8 graduate thesis students and provide mentorship and professional development support to all our students. The candidate will be responsible for teaching graduate-level courses in data management and analysis that include data munging, visualization, statistics, and statistical skills, including labs, while also contributing to the interdisciplinary Marine Mammal Science Seminar. They will also offer regular elective courses in their area of expertise related to managing data and its analysis in marine mammal science. Additionally, they will pursue external funding opportunities, foster collaborations with research institutions and agencies, and engage in service activities within the Marine Mammal Science program. The faculty member will also have the opportunity to contribute to undergraduate education through cross-listed courses, thesis supervision, and tutorials.

Summary:
This position is responsible for the routine handling and care of animals being housed in the Rehabilitation/Quarantine area under the supervision of the Wildlife Response Curator at the Alaska SeaLife Center. The main focus of this position is marine mammals but there are occasional responses to birds and other wildlife in the Seward area.

Education/Training Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal science, veterinary science or related field. Two years of experience in animal husbandry, experience with marine mammals preferred.

Essential Duties:
1. Under the supervision of the Husbandry Director/Wildlife Response Curator, assists in the delivery of animal care to animals being housed and cared for in the rehabilitation area, quarantine area, and other animal areas in the ASLC.
2. Coordinates with the Wildlife Response Curator and veterinary staff to ensure consistency in the delivery of animal care to animals being housed and cared for in the rehabilitation / quarantine area.
3. Performs routine animal husbandry to include diet preparation, feeding animals, cleaning animal enclosures, disinfecting prep areas and equipment, and maintaining animal records.
4. Follows established routine for animal care, food preparation, and clean up, including proper maintenance and sterilization of equipment.
5. Under the supervision of a veterinarian or a veterinary technician performs basic medical treatments such as delivery of oral medications and wound cleaning and assists in basic medical procedures such as animal restraint for physical exam.
6. Keeps proper records in accordance with the ASLC and permit requirements.
7. As team leader, supervises interns and volunteers to ensure animals are monitored and daily tasks are completed in a timely manner.
8. Participates as needed in presentations to visitors and the public on topics in marine science and ASLC operations.
9. Answers the ASLC’s 24-hour stranding hotline. May be asked to be on call to cover the hotline after regular working hours. Employees are compensated for being on call.
10. Becomes familiar with maintenance and operation of mechanical systems.
11. Maintains a valid driver’s license.
12. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
13. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to be organized, self-motivated, and possess a strong sense of cleanliness and animal awareness. Attention to detail. Willingness to work holidays, weekends, and/or overnights to accommodate the needs of the animal patients. Comfortable with social media and potentially being on camera and interviewed while working.
