Florida Marine Mammal Health Conference VI – March 28-30, 2018 – Orlando, Florida

Florida Marine Mammal Health Conference VI

March 28-30, 2018

Seaworld – Orlando, Florida

The purpose of the Florida Marine Mammal Health Conference VI is to address aquatic ecosystem health issues impacting marine mammals and other aquatic species in Florida. This conference will provide a forum for issues affecting Florida’s aquatic species, and provide an opportunity to review the impact environmental change has on their current health status, discuss future directions of investigation, and determine actions likely to produce benefits to their health and survival.

The conference is designed to bring together scientists, veterinarians, managers, policy makers, planners and partners who are actively involved in and/or affected by all aspects of aquatic ecosystem health. An interactive panel on current topics will invite participants to engage in discussion about critical issues in the field. Participants will interact in an interdisciplinary setting to summarize and review state-of-the-art science, healthcare, and management activities, with a focus on formulating goals and strategies for improvements. Attendees will have ample opportunities to share information regarding issues that affect marine mammals during topical discussion periods, poster sessions, and networking functions.

“Making Marine Science Matter”

The Society for Conservation Biology’s Marine Section (SCB Marine) invites you to attend the 5th International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC5), which will be held June 24 – 29 2018 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia (Airport code: KCH).

IMCC is a biennial meeting organized by SCB Marine. IMCC brings together more than 1,000 marine scientists, professionals, stakeholders, and students from around the world. The 2018 IMCC will feature sessions on widely ranging topics, including tourism, marine protected areas, fisheries, communication, sustainable seafood, climate change, endangered species, citizen science, public engagement and much more. The theme of IMCC5, Making Marine Science Matter, reflects our focus on applying scientific research to conservation and sustainability. IMCC5 will also feature the OceansOnline initiative, a full day dedicated to the uses of communication and online resources for marine conservation, on 29 June 2018. You can find more information at: http://conbio.org/mini-sites/imcc5/ where other details will be shared as they become available.

Behaviour 2017 – abstract submission is still open

This is a gently reminder that Behaviour 2017 Call for Abstracts will remain open until April 28th

Behaviour 2017 is a joint meeting of the 35th International Ethological Conference (IEC) and the 2017 Summer Meeting of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB), that will bring together researchers and students from all fields of behaviour science.

This exciting multidisciplinary meeting will be held in the Lisbon area, close to important international research centres, between July 30th and August 4th 2017. The venue, the Estoril Congress Centre, boasts a privileged location on the Cascais coast, 25 km away from the Lisbon airport, with plenty of accommodation in a relaxed environment, and it is right next to the famous Casino with its surrounding gardens. Besides the prestigious invited speakers and a full scientific program, participants will be able to enjoy numerous cultural and leisure options

Course announcement: Spatial analysis of ecological data using R

http://www.prstatistics.com/course/spatial-analysis-ecological-data-using-r-spae05/

This course will run from 7th – 12th August 2017 at SCENE field station, Loch Lomond national park, Scotland

The course will cover the concepts and R tools that can be used to analyse spatial data in ecology covering elementary and advanced spatial analysis techniques applicable to both plants and animals. We will investigate analyses appropriate to transect (e.g. line surveys, trapping arrays), grid (e.g. occupancy surveys) and point data (e.g. telemetry) making this course very relevant to those studying marine mammals. The focal questions will be on deriving species distributions, determining their environmental drivers and quantifying different types of associated uncertainty. Novel methodology for generating predictions will be introduced. We will also address the challenges of applying the results of these methods to wildlife conservation and resource management and communicate the findings to non-experts.
