Greetings SMM Members!
We are just past a very successful World Marine Mammal Conference in Barcelona and in the process for gearing up for SMM 2021 in West Palm Beach. However, we must also cast our gaze to 2023 and decide where our community will meet to discuss all things marine mammals. We will decide our 2023 venue in the upcoming SMM ballot and this page is intended to provide additional information to help inform your vote. Our three proposed venues are Sanya, China, Perth, Australia, and Singapore. All three are alluring destinations and have the facilities for a great conference. So please check out the information below and then vote for the venue that both entices you and offers up the opportunity for the most inclusive conference for our SMM community. And keep checking back as information will be updated regularly in the coming weeks!
|SMM 2023 Biennial Conference||Perth, Australia||Sanya, China||Singapore, Singapore|
|Relative Estimated Registration Cost¹||Similar or possibly less than previous conferences||Similar or possibly less than previous conferences||Similar or possibly more than previous conferences|
|Average Cost³ Meals Per Day $USD||$29||$17||$23|
|Average flights¹¹ from:
|Proposed Conference Dates||December, 2023||November, 2023||Oct., Nov., or Dec. 2023|
¹ This estimate is based on projected venue and other conference associated costs based on proposals and comparable conferences held in the region where possible. This estimate also includes likely government subsidies for conference support.
² Accommodation costs are based on double occupancy rates provided by the hotels that will most likely be supporting the conference venue. These don’t include any hostels, vacation rentals, or other options available to conference participants. Estimates in $USD.
³ These rates are the average of multiple travel sites and based on simple meals and not medium-higher end restaurants so should be considered a MINIMUM likely cost.
¹¹ This was calculated in $USD using Google Flights on March 6, 2020 and searching fairs between city pairs for November 14 – 21, 2020 and averaging the best 3 departing flights per Google.
Sanya, a city on the southern end of China’s Hainan Island, has a rich blend of vast beaches, upscale resorts, Buddhist temples, sprawling outback, lush forests, pristine marine environments and unique wildlife. With modern conference facilities Sanya offers many choices for the potential conference attendee. Easy visa requirements and relatively inexpensive food and accommodation rates make it a potentially good location for a marine mammal science conference in 2023.

“Come say G’day!
We invite you to come say “G’day” by voting for Australia to host the 2023 Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals for the first time ever.
Located in the ancient country of the Whadjuk Nyoongar people, Perth, the capital of Western Australia (WA) has been an important meeting place for at least 45,000 years. Situated on the Indian Ocean, Perth is an important city in the Asia-Pacific region. It provides a hub for WA’s vibrant and collegial community of marine mammal scientists including academics, Aboriginal ranger groups, NGOs, private institutions, government departments, industry groups and citizen scientists.
Our conference would be held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on the banks of the Swan River. This is a beautiful, central and modern location from where you can explore our city and surrounds. A short stay would allow you to experience a range of natural and cultural values. You can see dolphins, kangaroos, parrots and pelicans within a short walk of the venue itself. A 15-minute drive or train trip will deliver you to our famous sunset coast, with long stretches of white sandy beaches and inviting clear blue waters. A 45-minute boat trip can take you to local islands to visit Australian sea lions, dolphins, fairy penguins and quokkas. In a casual stroll, you can experience the Australian bush and view a rich display of wildflowers by visiting Kings Park without even leaving the city. We would, however, encourage delegates to make this a bucket list experience – stay longer and explore the great backyard wilderness that is our beloved WA.
Our vision is to host an enriching and sustainable conference, where everyone feels welcome and appreciated for their work. Our diverse scientific programme would focus on contemporary issues, including human dimensions and climate change. We have already gone to great lengths to secure the funding to achieve this:
- AU$125,000 bursary for student and developing country delegates, from Business Events Perth
- AU$25,000 for carbon offsets, from Business Events Perth
- Up to AU$200,000 for conference logistics depending on the number of delegates attending, from Tourism Australia
- Up to AU$100,000 partner contribution from Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre
Watch this short video – enjoy and get excited!
Please visit our website gdaysmm.com, where we provide you with more information about Perth and surrounds, the best ways to get here and move around, and answers to many questions you may have. Then, vote #PerthSMM2023! We will be ready to put the drinks on ice and fire up the BBQ!”
Newest update from Singapore:
“Greetings from sunny Singapore!
The team at the Tropical Marine Science Institute Singapore takes great pleasure in inviting you to consider Singapore as a destination for the Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals 2023.
Singapore is a thriving cosmopolitan city located in the heart of Southeast Asia, making it easily accessible not only from Europe and America, but especially so from Asia and Australia. Our unique multi-ethnic landscape will also ensure you plenty of opportunities to explore the city’s fascinating cultures and traditions. Changi Airport – the World’s Best Airport by Skytrax for 7 consecutive years, serves more than 100 international and regional airlines, spanning full service carriers to low cost carriers and we are connected to over 400 cities in more than 100 countries.
Through the years, Singapore has earned the reputation as one of the world’s best destinations for business events, including the Top Convention City in Asia (17 consecutive years, International Congress and Convention Association Global Rankings 2018), as well as the Top International Meeting Country (Union of International Associations Global Rankings 2018). Not forgetting, Singapore is also the safest city in Southeast Asia by Economic Intelligence Unit’s Safe Cities Index 2017, with one of the world’s lowest crime rate.
Our proposed venue for the conference include the iconic Marina Bay Sands with its rooftop infinity pool and world-class convention facility, Suntec Exhibition and Convention Centre – both located in downtown Singapore and a stone throw away from the bustling city centre and vibrant cultural precincts.
We have obtained financial support of up to US$320,000 from the Singapore Government for the hosting of the event in Singapore and our aim is to bring together 2,000 attendees from the global marine mammal community to our sunny island to learn, network and party!
We are fully committed to organizing a successful conference and we look forward to having the honor of hosting you in 2023.”
